Our Approach

The City Academy Acting Department takes what we like to call a ‘rainbow’ approach in that we do not adhere to just one school of thought on technique. You will experience various styles such as Method, Stanislavski, Meisner and Augusto Boal. Our acting coaches are all working, professional actors and directors who bring to bear their own expertise, enabling a rounded approach of effective techniques that work for you as an individual.

We firmly believe in the value of Acting and Drama Courses for developing life skills, irrespective of whether you want to pursue acting in a sustained way. Acting techniques are transferable to your working and social life, enhancing communication – learning about yourself and how you relate to others – building confidence and developing your imagination and creativity.

Our acting courses are planned to offer a progression through the levels of Beginners, Improvers to Advanced. You will receive guidance from your acting coach but in general we recommend that students take each level twice, with different teachers, before progressing to the next level. You will not repeat any content and will be challenged with new skills and acting techniques.

Advanced Acting Classes

Method Acting

The Method trains actors to use their imagination, senses and emotions to create credible, authentic performances that are grounded in the ‘truth of the moment.’ Many successful actors from both stage and screen subscribe to this technique such as Julia Roberts, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper to name a few.

A brief history: Konstantin Stanislavsky a Russian actor, director, teacher and co-founder of the Moscow Arts Theatre developed what he called a ‘system’ for actors to use in rehearsals. This ‘system’ was to develop an understanding of the motivations, obstacles, and objectives of any character in every moment.

The Method was a development of Stanislavski’s ‘system’ principally by Lee Strasberg who founded the Actors Studio in New York.
